The invention relates to a monitoring device for a printer, especially a she et- fed offset printer, comprising a control system which detects the signals fr om sensors in the individual units of the printer and through which command signals for the actuators/drive devices that are functionally connected to said control system can be generated in accordance with the signal states; a nd a monitoring computer which additionally detects the control states of the sensors and causes the actuators/drive devices to be shut off. The aim of th e invention is to develop a monitoring device of this type in such a way as to enable error-protected and especially, differentiated action in the event of a fault. The invention is characterised in that the signal states of the senso rs (SG) can be delivered to several slaves (S) which are configured as computer s and which are interconnected by a bus (UB) and connected to a monitoring master (UM) that precedes the monitoring computer (UR) and in that the actuators/drive devices (A) are each connected to one of the slaves (S) and can be shut off in response to a command sent from the monitoring master (UM ) via the bus (UB).
