Monitoring device has a rotating test element (52) driven by a motor (20), and a housing (12) for the motor. A seal (68) is placed between test element and housing to prevent ingress of material into the housing. Ideally the seal lies between test element and housing. The seal is such that it mounts around the driving axle (22) and compresses between test element and motor housing.
