The gear mechanism has a balance wheel (14) between a crankshaft gear (10) and a camshaft gear (12), which is rotatably mounted on a support plate (16). The support plate is held at least two connection points (18,20) spaced from the rotation axes (11,13) of the crankshaft and camshaft gears. The camshaft gear is held at the engine crankcase. The connection points are formed, to allow the support plate to move in the plane of the mechanism with respect to the crankcase. A unit (30) to apply a force to the support plate is provided, which presses the balance wheel against the crankshaft and camshaft gears.
