New 3,4-substituted 2-(N,N-di(het)arylamino)-thiophene derivatives are claimed. 2-(N,N-di-(het)arylamino)-thiophene derivatives are of formula (I). R<1>-R<5> = monofunctional (het)aryl system in the form of a conjugated carbo- or hetero-cyclic ring system or a linear or angular annelated or linked system of the same or different types of ring, in which the peripheral hydrogens may be replaced by alkyl, alkoxy, dialkylamino (all with 1-6C alkyl), phenoxy or diphenylamino groups; R<1> may also = bifunctional (het)arylene system; R<3> may also = R<8> (except when R<1> = (het)arylene); R<4> may also = R<10> or a group of formula (II) or (III); R<5> may also = H or a group of formula (IV), or R<4> plus R<5> may form a group of formula (V), (VI) or (VII), or R<4> plus R<1> may form a group (VIII), or R<4> plus R<3> may form a group (IX), or R<5> plus R<1> may form a group of formula (X), or R<5> plus R<3> may form a group of formula (XI), or R<5>, R<4> and R<1> may form a group of formula (XII) or (XIII), or R<5>, R<4> and R<3> may form a group of formula (XIV); R<8>, R<9>, R<10> = a chemical bond or bifunctional (het)arylene; Y = CH or N. An Independent claim is also included for a method for the production of (I) by: (a) reacting a sec. amine with a carboxylic acid halide to form an amide, (b) converting the amide into a thioamide and (c) reacting the thioamide with an alpha -haloacyl compound.
