5 - [3 - (C1- 5 alkyl) aminopropyl] or 5-[3-(C1- 5 alkyl) aminopropylidene] - 5H - debenzo [a, d]-cycloheptenes optionally having one or more C1- 5 alkyl, C1- 5 perfluoroalkyl, amino, mono-or di-(C1- 5 alkyl)amino, C1- 5 alkylsulphonamino, halogen, hydroxy, C1- 5 alkoxy, C1- 5 perfluoroalkoxy, carboxy, C1- 5 alkylsulphonyl, C1- 5 perfluroalkylsulphonyl, sulphamoyl, or mono- or di-(C1- 5 alkyl) sulphamoyl nuclear substituents are prepared by dehydrogenating the corresponding N,N - dialkyl - 10,11 - dihydro compound and then dealkylating the resulting unsaturated compound for example by reacting it with a cyanogen halide and hydrolysing the intermediate cyanamide or by reacting it with a halothioformate and hydrolysing the intermediate thiourethane or by reacting it with a haloformate and hydrolysing the urethane intermediate.
