The invention relates to a catalytic converter which has a greater resistance to temperatures and aging, and which contains at least one intermetallic compound of a noble metal element such as ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium or platinum with a rare-earth metal such as scandium, yttrium, lanthanum or another lanthanide. The catalytic converter is used for cleaning exhaust gases emitted by internal combustion engines and by gas-fired or oil-fired heaters. By appropriately selecting the alloy partners and the mixture of such compounds, the catalytic converter can be designed in a particularly advantageous manner with regard to the catalytic activity thereof.
