摘要 PURPOSE: To provide a method for evaluating the optical modulation characteristics of a liquid crystal modulation element in which an index representative of a brightness modulation amount, as the optical modulation characteristics of a liquid crystal modulation element, can be represented and the optical characteristics value can be determined by a generic method insusceptible to the number of design parameters of an optical element to be determined ultimately and design parameter conditions required for performing good optical modulation while optimizing the optical modulation characteristics can be found out easily. CONSTITUTION: Brightness modulation amount for dark display is determined by determining a Mueller matrix between immediately before and after impingement of light to a phase difference object.
