PURPOSE: A system and a method for performing a playback of a multimedia file are provided to store a high capacity multimedia file by using a CD-ROM/DVD-ROM disk as a multimedia file storage medium, and to increase satisfaction by performing playback of various multimedia files through a multi codec driver, and to add a new codec driver by upgrading the multi codec driver because the multi codec driver is a software. CONSTITUTION: A system for performing a playback of a multimedia file includes a loader part(200), a control part(210), a buffer(220), an A/D converter(230), a D/A converter(240), a key pad(250), a display part(260), a microphone(270), and a speaker(280). The loader part(200) reads data stored at a CD-ROM/DVD-ROM disk, and outputs the data to the control part(210). The control part(210) stores the data at the buffer(220), or outputs the data to the speaker(280) or the display part(260) through the D/A converter(240). At this time, the control part(210) performs a multi-tasking. For the multi-tasking, the control part(210) includes a file system module(211), a codec module(212), and a user interface module(213). The file system module(211) extracts a multimedia file from the data, and manages the data. The codec module(212) decodes the multimedia file, and recovers video data and audio data from the decoded multimedia file. At this time, the codec module(212) includes plural codec drivers in order to decode various multimedia files. The user interface module(213) reads the multimedia file from the file system module(211) according to a selection signal inputted through the key pad(250), and outputs data decoded by the codec module(212) to the display part(260) or the D/A converter(240).
