The valve actuator has opening and closing magnets, each provided with a magnetic yoke (2.1,3.1), controlling the oscillation of an armature plate (5.1) with an attached valve rod (5.2) and a spring rod (7.1) carrying an actuator spring (7.2), acting against the magnetic yoke of the closure magnet or an additional actuator component (8) attached to the latter magnetic yoke. A spacer disc (9) between the actuator spring and the magnetic yoke of the closure magnet or the additional component determines the position of the armature plate. An Independent claim for a method for setting the position of an armature plate of a valve actuator is also included.
