PURPOSE: A fluid-filled capacitor with pressure interrupter means and internal compressible air chamber is provided, in which the pressure responsive interrupter system operates reliably before rupture of the housing. CONSTITUTION: A capacitor(10) includes a housing(12) having a case and a cover(14), the cover(14) having terminals thereon for connecting the capacitor in an electrical circuit, a capacitive element(18) received in the housing and connected with the terminals, pressure responsive interrupter means associated with the cover and terminals for breaking the connection between the capacitive element(18) and the terminals upon a high pressure condition in the housing, air chamber defining means(20) providing a confined compressible volume of air in the housing, and an insulating fluid(26) substantially immersing the capacitive element within the housing.
