PURPOSE: A device and a method for displaying an input character mode of a computer screen are provided to prevent an error input by recognizing a currently inputted character mode promptly and recognizing a capital letter and a small letter separately in a computer program applying at least two character modes. CONSTITUTION: A system bus(5) which is an input/output bus connects data, commands, and interrupts with each circuit unit or a device unit of a system. A CPU(1) is connected to a system bus(5) and controls a computer system, and includes a character mode recognition unit(1a) analyzing a key input signal inputted by a keyboard(9) and recognizing a capital letter and a small letter of a character mode. A RAM(2) is connected to a system bus(5) and provides a place for a system software and an application program to be loaded. A ROM(3) is connected to the system bus(5) and loads a specific program to be executed by the CPU(1). A display controller(4) controls and outputs video signal by a control signal from the system bus(5). A display device(41) receives the video signal being outputted from the display controller(4) and provides a character and an image information. The display controller(4) comprises a cursor control unit(4a) receiving a mode of the inputted character or a signal of a capital letter and a small letter and displaying an icon corresponding to the mode of the inputted character or the signal of a capital letter and a small letter on one portion of the cursor, and a mouse pointer control unit(4b) receiving the mode of the inputted character or the signal of a capital letter and a small letter and displaying an icon corresponding to the mode of the inputted character or the signal of a capital letter and a small letter on one portion of the mouse pointer.
