PURPOSE: A method for monitoring a catalyst activity of a catalytic converter is provided, in which a temperature sensor positioned within or after the catalyzer is used for detecting the temperature characteristic after cold-starting of the automobile engine until a temperature plateau is reached, with comparison of the length of the temperature plateau with the length of a temperature plateau for a new catalyzer. CONSTITUTION: A method comprises the steps of recording a temperature transition by a temperature sensor from starting a cold start, determining a temperature plateau from the transition, comparing the length of the temperature plateau with the length of the temperature plateau determined beforehand for a new catalytic converter, interpreting shortening of the measured length of the temperature plateau as aging of the catalytic converter and determining that the catalytic converter is defective if the shortening exceeds a set limit value. |
