PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily and inexpensively produce high purity silicon suboxide powder without using a reductant of silicon and/or carbon. SOLUTION: A method for producing silicon suboxide powder having SiOx (wherein 1.0<x<=1.8) composition features that a siliceous raw material comprising SiO2 as a principal ingredient and substantially not containing both of silicon and carbon is heated in a reaction chamber formed of an electrical heating furnace to generate an SiO-containing gas, the gas is cooled preferably at a cooling rate of >=1,000 deg.C/s and a flow rate of >=0.2 m/s and powder produced is collected.
