PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal mixture which, in a supertwisted liquid crystal display, has a short switching time and can achieve a wide operating temperature range, a sharpness of rise of characteristic curve, a good angle dependence of contrast, and low threshold voltage. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal mixture is based on at least one compound represented by formula I and/or formula II and a compound represented by formula B1VIII (R1 is a 1-12C alkyl provided one or two distant CH2 groups may be substituted by -O-,-CH=CH-, -CO-, -O-CO-, or -CO-O-; r is 0 or 1; s is 0, 1, or 2; rings A1 and A2 are each independently trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene, or 3-fluoro-1,4-phenylene; L is H or F; and ring C is a group represented by formula III).
