PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a raw material for a high performance polymer, especially a phenolic compound useful as a raw-material for an epoxy resin, which is excellent in heat resistance, moisture resistance and has an excellent performance in mechanical property such as shock resistance; and a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: The raw material is a phenolic compound represented by formula (1) (in formula (1), R1, R2 and R3 are each hydrogen atom or a 1-6C hydrocarbon group, (n) is an integer of 0-15, and (m) is an integer of 0-2). The phenolic compound can be obtained by reacting a phenol and a condensing agent represented by formula (2) and formula (3) respectively in the presence of an acid catalyst at a condensing agent/phenol mole ratio of 0.01-0.9.
