PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a polyolefin polymerization catalyst which forms a little amount of a by-product upon prepolymerization, has good powder properties, and besides, high activity. SOLUTION: The olefin polymerization catalyst is used by contacting catalyst components for the olefin polymerization of the following components [A] and [B] with an olefin, prepolymerizing the olefin and then drying the resulting products. The component [A] is an ion exchangable phyllosilicate wherein a cation of Zn or Li is put in the system and chemical by treated. The component [B] is a transition metal compound of the periodic table groups 3-12.
