1,006,149. Blanks transferring; forging nuts. LAMSON & SESSIONS CO. May 6, 1964 [May 6, 1963], No. 18923/64. Heading B3H. Mechanism for transferring a workpiece between work stations comprises a transfer unit such as 17 mounted on a movable carrier 13 and having a workpiece gripping member 73 which is rotatable for reversing the workpiece and a workpiece supporting member 78. In a cold heading machine for forging nuts, a blank is severed from stock 59 in a die 18 and transferred successively through die stations 19-22 by transfer units 14-17 adjustably mounted on a common reciprocating carrier 13. Each unit has a non-rotatable lower member 78 biased upwardly by spring 81 and a rotatable upper gripping member 73 biased downwardly by a spring 88. The lower member 78 is adjustable axially by nuts 94 and the upper member 73 is adjustable by a spacer 86. Member 73 is clamped by rod 74 to a sleeve 70 carrying at its upper end a gear quadrant 100 meshing with a stationary rack 101. If the workpieces are to be transferred without reversal, the respective gear quadrant can be locked with its teeth out of engagement with the rack teeth. |
