PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermally degrading method capable of increasiy the yield of a hydrocarbon gas such as ethylene and propylene. SOLUTION: This method for producing the ethylene has a step far adding methane to a hydrocarbon feedstock gas before feeding the hydrocarbon feedstock gas to a reaction tube 22. Preferably, the method also has a step for adding methane and steam to the feedstock gas before feeding the feedstock gas to the reaction tube 22.
