PURPOSE: A portable video phone and a control method thereof are provided to perform radio audio communication and radio video communication by preparing a camera for video signal input and an LCD(liquid crystal display) for video signal output. CONSTITUTION: An on/off button(8) enables image and voice to be transmitted or received in on state, and enables just audio communication in off state. A video mode switch(9) transmits an image of a camera(18) from the inside to an LCD(20) if an N mode is selected, and transmits the image of the camera(18) to an opponent and simultaneously outputs an image received from the opponent to the LCD(20) if an X mode is selected, and does not display the image transmitted from the opponent but just transmits the image of the camera(18) to the opponent and simultaneously outputs the image of the camera(18) to the LCD(20) inside if an R mode is selected. A stationary picture button(10) catches an instantaneous image to record a stationary picture at a frame buffer(12) and simultaneously transmits it to the opponent or to the LCD(20) in on state, and displays a moving picture in off state. A video codec processor(11) compresses camera video data inputted through a camera circuit(19) with the frame buffer(12) to transmit it to a multiplexing unit(4), or recovers video data inputted in a state of being compressed in a reverse multiplexing unit(5) to transmit it to an LCD control circuit(21).
