PURPOSE: A device and a method for operating firmware are provided to reduce a cost and to stores and renew new firmware without memory capacity by receiving firmware stored in a host with a file type and storing this in SRAM of cheaper memory and operating this. CONSTITUTION: An optical pickup(20) reads and outputs recording data of an optical disk(10). R/F part(30) makes a filtered wave formation a signal detected from the optical pickup(20) and outputs this by a binary signal. A sled motor(21) makes a parallel movement the optical pickup. A driver part(51) drives the sled motor and a spindle motor. A servo part(50) controls a drive of the driver part(51) from tracking error and focus error signal of the optical pickup and rotation speed of the optical disk. A digital signal processing part(40) restores the binary signal to original data with itself clock made a phase synchronization to the binary signal. A micom(60) controls motion of the servo part(50) and the digital signal processing part(40) and has a mask ROM(60a) to store minimum code necessary to download of firmware and driver recognition when booting. A static RAM(62) stores and operates a disk drive firmware. A host interface part(70) executes a data exchange with an external host like a personal computer through IDE bus.
