The card dealing machine has a recess that accepts a shuffled deck of cards (2), and a mechanism to deal cards one at a time. As a card is dealt its value is scanned, recorded in a memory and made available for display. The machine can accept a smart card (3) and after identification of the card, transfer the playing card values stored in its memory to the smart card.
