The cylinder head gasket (10) has a wedging ring (22) spot welded round the periphery of the hole (14) for the combustion chamber which is centred and welded on as a disc onto the gasket prior to punching out the hole (14), to ensure concentricity. The gasket (10) is punched out of sheet metal (12), complete, less the combustion cylinder hole (14), but instead a centring hole (26) is produced. A disc (30) with a complementary hole (32) is placed on top of the gasket, holes are lined up by a locating peg (34) and the two are spot welded together round the disc's periphery at raised dimples (28) on the gasket. The hole (14) is then punched out to leave the peripheral wedge (22) around the hole (14).
