Automatic safety stop has a cylinder and an accumulator with a piston (30) movable in the cylinder (20) with a chamber (32) permanently connected t the cylinder and selectively to a discharge reservoir via a solenoid valve. In case of interruption of current flow to the lift between floors, a switch temporarily open the valve to move the piston. The valve remains open while the pressure in the accumulator is greater than that in the cylinder.
