A real-time interface (19 or 21) between the public switched telephone network (PSTN) (15 or 17) and an Internet Protocol (IP) network (13) provides voice-to-data and data-to-voice conversion between the PSTN (15 or 17) and the IP network (13) in a seamless process. The interface, a central communication network (19 or 21), performs Class 5 switching between the PSTN (15 or 17) and the IP network (13), besides providing enhanced services. Receiving a call, the central communication network (19 or 21) simultaneously routes the call to a plurality of pre-programmed numbers on the PSTN (15 or 17) and on the IP network (13). The central communication network (19 or 21) provides call screening, takes voice messages and converts them to e-mail messages, takes e-mail or facsimile messages and converts them to voice messages. Through the central communication network (19 or 21), a computer (59) hooked-up to the IP network (13) can exchange voice messages and facsimile messages with a PSTN (15 or 17) connected device (93 or 91 or 75 or 41 or 39 or 37 or 35) and conduct conference calling with a plurality of PSTN devices (93 or 75 or 39 or 35). |
