A power saving method and device, capable of selecting dynamically a more proper power saving mode according to the operating condition of a computer system. When a power saving system task (15) confirms that an executable user task is no more available in an execution queue (132) and the queue is idle, a power saving transition judging unit (154) checks whether or not a timer limit waiting event is available in an event queue (131) and switches the computer system from a regular operation mode to a first or second power saving operation mode having different power saving effects depending on the presence or absence of a time limit waiting event. The power saving mode canceling unit (231) of an interrupt handler (23) restores the system to a regular operation mode from the first or second power saving operation mode. For example, the CPU's operation clock is halted in the first power saving operation mode, and, in the second power saving operation mode, the CPU's operation clock is halted and a timer interrupt is halted.
