A paper for a newspaper characterized in that it has a basis weight of 35 to 45 g/m2 and an average pure bending rigidity in the transverse direction aft er humidity conditioning at 23~C, 50 % RH of 1 to 11 .mu. N.bullet. m2/m. The paper preferably has a pH of 5 to 9.5 as measured by a test method for the p H of paper according to a cold water extraction method defined in JIS P8113. T he above paper is free from the occurrence of clogging at bayonet point parts i n cutting and folding facilities for printed newspaper sheets and exhibits excellent operability in the printing process of a newspaper.
