<p>1391308 Finishing leather BARRETT & CO Inc 19 July 1972 [19 July 1971] 33789/72 Heading B5N A method of finishing leather comprises placing a leather substrate between a finish coating on a release layer and a backing layer having a finish-receptive surface in contact with the substrate, transferring the finish coating from the release layer on to the surfaces of the leather substrate and exposed areas of the backing layer opposed to the release layer, separating the release layer from the transferred finish coating, and removing the coated leather substrate from the backing layer. The finish coatings are preferably polyurethane, or acrylic resin in nitrocellulose emulsions, the acrylic resins being polymers of (meth)acrylic acid, alkyl (meth)acrylates, and/or (meth)acrylamides, and are preferably coated onto release papers having a polymethylsiloxane release coating. The leather and the backing sheet, which may be kraft paper, may be pre-coated with an adhesive acrylic coating from aqueous emulsion to promote adhesion of the finish coating. Preferably the backing layer is continuously unrolled and supports leather substrates. The coated relase paper is also continuous and unrolled over the substrate to form a compressed sandwich between a pair of transfer rollers, the roller nearest the release layer being heated. After stripping the relase paper, the supported and coated leather are passed between further rollers similar to those used for the transfer rolls to impart gloss to the coating. Alternatively, the coated release layer and backing layer are joined along one edge to form a finishing assembly and are of a size slightly greater than the substrate, each substrate being inserted into an assembly individually to form a sandwich which is inserted between the transfer rollers and further rollers. The finish layer may be two layers of different resins selected from those mentioned above and preformed on the release layer.</p> |
