A process for the co-carbonylation of methanol and an olefinically unsaturated carbonylatable reactant having at least two carbon atoms, and/or reactive derivatives thereof to produce a mixture of acetic acid and a carboxylic acid having at least three carbon atoms, and/or an ester of either or both carboxylic acids, which process comprises contacting at elevated temperature and pressure (i) carbon monoxide, (ii) methanol and/or a reactive derivative thereof, (iii) an olefinically unsaturated carbonylatable reactant having at least two carbon atoms and/or a reactive derivative thereof and (iv) water in a liquid reaction composition in a carbonylation reactor, the liquid reaction composition comprising (a) a finite concentration of water, (b) a hydrocarbyl halide, (c) a rhodium catalyst and (d) ruthenium and/or osmium as promoter.
|
