PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the occurrence of horizontal smears and after images. SOLUTION: In the pixel area of the surface of the liquid crysta side of one substrate of substrates disposed to face oppositely, a first electrode and a second electrode which generates an electric field having a component nearly parallel to the substrate between this first electrode and the substrate are formed through an insulating film. The first electrode consists of a transparent electrode formed in the central part except at least the circumscription of the pixel area. The second electrode is extended to one direction and consists of a plurality of electrodes juxtaposed in the direction which intersects in the above direction. The first electrode has a hole in the part where at least one of the second electrode is supperposed, and this hole is broader then the second electrode in the direction intersecting the extended direction of the second electrode.
