PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device using plastic substrates securing a sufficient short circuit preventing function between electrodes without damaging productivity and development to a large substrate and without damaging the forming property of an alignment layer in its manufacturing stage and stress resistive reliability and the like. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device having transparent electrode layers 12 provided on the surfaces opposed to each other of a pair of plastic substrates 11 disposed opposite to each other and interposing a liquid crystal layer 15 comprises a film 16 consisting essentially of silicon oxide obtained by applying and then calcining a liquid sample and provided on the liquid crystal layer side of the electrode layer of at least one of the transparent electrode layers 12.
