PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic tape device which assures interchangeability between various magnetic tape devices and is capable of managing the quality condition of magnetic tape media. SOLUTION: This device is provided with a pattern detecting circuit 5 which discriminates the kinds of a tone pattern (a), all zero pattern (c) and all one pattern (b) and a mark detecting circuit 3 which consists of a density-ID detecting circuit 31 for detecting the patterns of a density-ID region 811, an interblock gap detecting circuit 32 for detecting an interblock gap (IBG) 821 and an all track all zero detecting circuit 33 for detecting the patterns recorded in a blank region 812. The history information of the errors generated in recording and reproducing of the magnetic tape medium 8 is previously recorded in the blank region 812.
