The present invention is directed to a platinum-containing carbon-containing anode for a rechargeable lithium ion electrochemical cell. The anode is comprised of large surface area carbon material that has been coated with platinum molecules e.g. at least 1 % Pt). The integrity of the anode is maintained through the use of one of two binding agents, either Teflon TM or polyvinylidene fluoride. In conjunction with a lithium cobalt oxide cathode and a Celgard TM separator, the anode forms an electrode sandwich. The electrode sandwich, in turn, comprises a rechargeable lithium ion electrochemical cell composed of the electrode sandwich wetted by an electrolyte composition, containing LiPF6 dissolved in equal parts EC and DMC, within a sealed container. The resulting rechargeable lithium ion electrochemical cell exhibits a capacity at the theoretical limit for carbon, namely 372 mAh/gram. Furthermore, the resulting rechargeable lithium ion electrochemical cell exhibits the same high capacity upon repeated cycling.
|
