PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a field component of an inexpensive linear motor which can easily magnetize and assemble a permanent magnet without deteriorating the motor performance, and also provide a method of magnetizing a permanent magnet for the field. SOLUTION: A linear motor comprises a field yoke 5 in which a plurality of permanent magnets 6 for field are located, and an armature 1 which is located opposing to a train of permanent magnets 6 in the longitudinal direction of the field yoke 5 via a magnetic gap G to be provided with a wound armature coil 4. The field yoke 5 is provided with a plurality of projections 5A in the longitudinal direction thereof with an equal interval, and the permanent magnets 6 located with the same polarity preset in the same direction toward the opposing surface to the magnetic gap G between the adjacent projections 5A of the field yoke 5. As a result, the projection 5A adjacent to the permanent magnet 6 having the polarity N is set to the inverse polarity S, and, when the power is fed to the armature coil 4, the magnetic field as much as the number of polarities required for the linear motor is generated, thereby moving an armature 1 in the linear didrection.
