PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for discriminating the kinds of disks which is capable of discriminating the disk kinds of plural kinds of the optical disks varying in track pitches like a CD format disk and a DVCD disk. SOLUTION: In the method for discriminating the kinds of the optical disks which discriminates plural kinds of the optical disk varying in the track pitches, reproduction is started after the optical disk is mounted at an optical disk device and an optical pickup is allowed to make tack jump by as much as the prescribed number of tracks from a reference position and the sector number in the track jump position is detected. The kinds of the optical disks are discriminated by comparing the detected sector number with the threshold.
