Detecting failure in pressure system of IC engine fuel injection system

The fuel injection system includes a fuel pressure accumulator whose pressure is regulated via a control circuit with a pressure measuring device (16,17). For observation purposes, the measured pressure in the pressure accumulator is recorded w.r.t. time to show periodic pressure fluctuations caused by the periodic operation of the injectors and/or the sequence of piston strokes of a high pressure pump (12). An indication of failure is given if the periodicity of the recorded pressure signal with regard to the amplitude and/or uniformity of the fluctuations deviates sharply from a pattern representing the correct operation of the system.
