<p>This invention discloses a method and assay kit for the diagnosis of neoplastic transformation in a cell sample, tissue sample, or bodily fluid sample of a patient. Specifically, the detection of cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and/or cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression and/or biological activity, particularly in conjunction with the detection of the presence of an oncogenic virus, is used as an indicator of neoplastic transformation or a potential for neoplastic transformation in a sample. The invention also includes a method for evaluating the carcinogenicity of a compound by evaluating COX-1 and/or COX-2 expression and/or biological activity in a test cell before and after contact with a putative carcinogen. Diagnostic assay kits suitable for use with the present methods are also disclosed.</p> |
