According to an embodiment of the invention, a method for establishing a language model to recognize speech of a first language comprises: obtaining language model parameters for a second language that is not the first language; obtaining training data for the first language; determining a language model based on the language model parameters for the second language and the training data for the target language (450); and making the language model available for use to handle speech of the first language (460).
