PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical unit driving method for an original reader which makes an applied current to a motor from the drive start of an optical unit up to an original reading position multistep control, does not have defective performance of the optical unit and can cope with the loss of synchronism. SOLUTION: Current caused to flow to the motor is made a maximum current value A1 until the optical unit is moved to the position of marking 91, and the optical unit is driven as a velocity v1. When the optical unit detects the marking at a time t1, the velocity is accelerated up to a velocity v2 with a current value defined as A2 (A2<A1). When the marking is not detected due to the slacking of wire, etc., even though the time t1 passes, the velocity v1 is made to be maintained with a current value defined as A4. When the marking is detected at a time t2, the velocity is accelerated up to a velocity v2 with a current defined as A5 and the velocity v2 is maintained. When the marking is not detected even though a time t3 passes, the driving of the motor and the optical units are stopped, and a notifying means notifies to the effect that the marking is not detected.
