The invention relates to a method and device for the measurement of an isotopic component of an analyte gas, which is a constituent of a gas mixture, in particular, the expired air of a patient according to the generic part of the patent claims (1 and 11). The aim of the invention is to improve the measuring method and the corresponding device for application in the medical field, such that, with a previously set and determined calibration value, measurements can be made, without diluting the gas matrix as such, so much that the measuring process is seriously compromised. The aim of the invention is achieved, whereby, for exact determination of the component, the analyte gas is diluted with a gas component in a temporarily closed gas cycle, to such an extent and in such a way, that the resulting component, or partial pressure of the gas component accompanying the analyte gas, has a direct instead of merely asymptotic relationship to the gas composition of the previously used calibration gas.
