The spring has a winding composed of a hollow body which is or can be filled with a special medium. The rigidity of the spring can be altered by a physical alteration process being applied to the said medium. The aggregate condition of the medium can also be altered, e.g. between solid and fluid, e.g. by solid particles being introduced into or removed from the hollow body.
