A sheet stack (1) is lowered, and a stacking table (8) is moved over the stack under the following sheet (9.2) and up to the front stops (2). Lifter fingers (6) are moved into the front of the stack below the level of the stacking table, the sheet is lifted by the fingers, and an auxiliary stack (10) is built on the table. The fingers are moved out of the stack and the front of the sheet is released, the table is extracted and the back if the sheet is released, and the auxiliary stack is deposited on the new stack.
