A method for driving an active matrix display apparatus for gray scale display in which one frame includes sub-frames composed of a write period and a hold period and the gray scale display is realized by a hold period accumulation effect, wherein during the hold period of each sub-frame relating to a predetermined scanning line, the other scanning lines than the predetermined scanning line are randomly produced in a predetermined order so as to prevent the same sub-frame relating to the same scanning line from being written, and the write and hold periods for each sub-frame is substantially ensured for each scanning line over one frame period, thereby conducting gray-scale display drive. As a result, the frame period is shortened.
