PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a picture generation method for adaptively switching a picture displayed on HMD in accordance with the operation state of an shielding mechanism installed in HMD. SOLUTION: Picture data sent to HMD is set to be CG picture data so that HMD is used as optical see-through HMD when the shielding mechanism is turned off. When the shielding mechanism is turned on, picture data sent to HMD is obtained by synthesizing CG picture data and actual picture data so that HMD is used as video-type see-through HMD. Actual picture data is picture data from a camera installed in HMD, for example.
