Support is provided by a restrainer wall (7) which extends from the front bumper to roof height right across the vehicle and is joined to a holder (10) which transfers the wall from rest (6) to support position (9) and holds the wall there. At rest, the wall folds up in the front part of the vehicle below the bumper, only to fold out into the supporting position (9) to form a banana curve convex to the vehicle. After a collision the wall enters its support position with time delay and a secondary airbag system below the bumper includes a single or multiple or one or multi-chambered airbag to act as restrainer wall (7). In a variant, the restraint is offered by means of a net slung out into the supporting position by a pivotally mounted slinger arm. At rest, the arm carries the folded net at one end and is so coupled to a spring arrangement that the carrying part of the arm extends in line off the arm pivot point so the arm as a whole swings upwards simultaneously or with delay. The holder (1) is preferably an inflatable airbag lance (35).
