PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To resolve the problem with conventional methods which define a topology clearly that they require large data capacity and the problem with conventional methods which do not define a topology clearly that they require map data maintenance work. SOLUTION: A geological information system has a map database 9, a connected relationship database 10 for storing a topology about an object constituting a closed area on the map data 9 or an object not constituting a closed area on a map, and a control means 1 for performing a variety of geological information processes using the databases. No topology is defined for an area where recognition of the closed area and tracking of a route are made possible through calculations made by the control means 1; a topology is defined within the connected relationship database 10, only for an area where recognition of the closed area and tracking of the route cannot be achieved through the calculations.
