PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sound absorbing member which has high durability, does not destroy the surrounding environment, may be applied with coloring harmonized with the surrounding environment and hardly gives rise to the variation in the effect of lowering noise. SOLUTION: Synthetic fiber nonwoven fabric blocks 12C-1 and 12C-2 formed by entangling fire-retardant fibers, such as vinylidene chloride-vinyl chloride copolymer fibers, acrylonitrile-vinyl chloride copolymer fibers and acrylonitrile- vinylidene chloride fibers, of 10 to 50 denier and fibers which are approximately equal to these fire-retardant fibers and have a melting point lower than the melting point of the fire-retardant fibers of 10 to 50 denier and coupling the fire-retardant fibers by melting the fibers of the low melting point are used as the sound absorbing material of the sound absorbing member 1A".
