PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a camera capable of automatically withdrawing a focal distance variable photographing lens at appropriate time, completely protecting a lens frame and further preventing a shutter chance from being missed because of needlessly collapsing a lens barrel. SOLUTION: In this camera, the non-operating duration of a camera operating switch in the extended state of the lens barrel is counted. When the duration exceeds specified 1st reference time being shorter, the extended state of the lens barrel is checked. When the lens barrel is at a wide end position, it is immediately with drawn to a collapsible position, however when it is extended to a position where it takes much time to make the lens barrel in the same extended state again and a position near to a telephoto end side than the wide end position, the lens barrel is withdrawn to the collapsible position by waiting until the duration exceeds specified 2nd reference time being longer.
