Process for preventing intensive cooling of band edge regions of a cast rod (6) comprises producing an energy-rich spray beam (10) of a deviating medium and directing across the band edge regions against the running water (9) in such a way that the water is deviated from the band edge regions and led in openings of the secondary cooling chamber (8) on both sides of the cast rod. An independent claim is also included for a device for preventing cooling of band edge regions of a cast rod. Preferred Features: The deviating medium is water or a water/air mixture.
