A gas mixture containing nitrogen dioxide and oxygen is used in a process for the production of phosphorus-III compounds by the oxidation of white phosphorus (dissolved in a halogenated solvent). An independent claim is also included for a method for the production of phosphorous acid by: (1) preparation of phosphorus-III oxide by the process described above; and (2) hydrolysis in water at not above 20[deg]C.
