A plain bearing sleeve has a steel backing layer 5, a sintered bronze layer 2 and a plastics sliding contact layer 4. Once the bronze layer 2 has been applied to the steel backing layer 5, depressions 3 are formed in the bronze layer 2, the plastics layer 4 is applied to the bronze layer 2, the blank is rolled to form a sleeve, and the sleeve is calibrated to the required dimensions by plastic displacement of the material of the bronze layer 2 into the depressions 3 of the bronze layer 2. The plastics layer 4 also fills pores in the bronze layer 2 and the thickness of the layer 4 reduces to a minimum or is partly eliminated in the vicinity of raised portions of the bronze layer 2. The plastics sliding contact layer 4 may be of PTFE, and the bronze layer grooves 3 may be parallel, transverse to the sliding direction or inclined relative to the axial direction. Calibration may involve displacing a gauge in the groove direction or axially moving a mandrel.
|
